eBike Experience: Max and Bryan

When Max and her husband Bryan moved to the Borders in 2017 she quickly realised that cycling on her hybrid mountain bike was going to be a lot more challenging than she was used to because of all the hills.
Together they completed a cycling challenge for Prostate Cancer research, but were finding it so hard to do the miles because they live on the side of a hill and every journey involved a long punishing slog up either at the start or the end.

Bryan then decided to buy them both kits to convert their bikes to ebikes, which made a big difference. They weren’t exhausted all the time so they could do a lot more miles. They wanted to go further but found the battery just didnt have the range.
So with the help of an interest-free loan from Energy Saving Trust they bought two brand new ebikes. The ebikes they bought were more suitable for roads, with the biggest battery they could get. Max and Bryan have never looked back.

Max used to get fed up of not being able to keep up with Bryan and he used to get fed up waiting for Max. Now they are much more able to ride together at a pace they both like. Cycling has gone from being a form of hard cardio workout for Max to being a form of transport, and they are much more likely to use their bikes for short local journeys as well as longer days out.
They take their bikes on the bus and on holiday. They have cycled all over the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Northumberland, the Lake District (including all the big mountain passes) and they are just back from a trip up to the Isle of Mull. It’s given them a new way to enjoy this lovely country at a slower pace where it’s easier to stop and take in the view or explore a new landmark.
Max says “With a decent battery my limit now is more about how much my backside can stand in a day than how far my legs can go without turning to jelly!”

You might be interested to know that Max's passion for ebikes has continued - she is a very active member of our eb4b project.
